The Rajesh Khanna mania was something that had never before been experienced.I have never seen anything like that in my life.I wouldn't say he was the world's best actor but his mannerisms were much admired and emulated those days.What worked was his charm,his wonderful smile and undeniably,more than any other actor,he had the best music ever in Hindi cinema.

When Hrishikesh Mukherjee signed me for Anand,it was a dream come true.I had a great admiration for Kakaji as an actor and also for the mass hysteria he evoked was seen for the first time in the history of hindi films.People would come up to me and ask how does he look like and what does he do.I became famous purely for having worked with him.

1980 also saw Rajesh Khanna superstar of 1970s,take on the role of a serial killer in the unsettling and orignal Red Rose.In a much more radical move than the Shah Rukhs and Sanjay Dutts of today,Khanna broke with his lover boy screen image and portrayed a disturbed woman-hater who lured young women to his house,murdered and buried them in his garden.
